Driving Innovation from Idea-to-Solution
Government agencies face complex, dynamic challenges. At Noblis, we advance customer missions by applying innovative thinking, transforming novel ideas and inventions into practical, sustainable state-of-the-art solutions that increase performance, readiness and efficiency. This idea-to-solution mindset expands to the needs of all to enrich lives and accelerate missions in every arena.
Investing to Invigorate Tomorrow’s Missions
Investing in our own research and development is part of what makes us the unique nonprofit organization that we are.
Our Noblis Sponsored Research (NSR) program is driven by government missions and fuels solutions to our nation’s most critical challenges. It is an essential part of corporate life at Noblis, generating transformative and sustainable solutions with enduring impact. Our NSR projects demonstrate high-tech and forward-thinking while allowing us to expand capabilities and provide rewarding outlets for Noblis’ inventive spirit.
To foster collaboration and facilitate continued capability improvement, we utilize a digital tool for colleagues across the organization to exchange ideas and solve complex customer challenges. Each year this ideation process invites all staff to participate in proposing new projects to be considered for corporate funding in topical areas of technological interest, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, autonomous systems, advanced analytics, bioinformatics, cybersecurity and more.

Sparking Coordination: Autonomous Systems
Noblis research aligns with the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) National Vehicle-to-Everything Deployment plan utilizing wireless communications for vehicles, pedestrians and roadway infrastructure for swifter and safer travel.
- Challenge: Increasingly capable autonomous vehicles and the technologies that underpin these machines have the potential to transform our nation’s roadway system. How can these emerging, potentially transformative technologies be integrated at-scale into existing systems?
- Solution: Noblis’ Autonomous Systems Research Center is developing systems that allow autonomous machines to self-organize at scale and build mechanisms of trust to optimize the interactions of vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians on our roadways,

Sparking Streamlined Security: AI/ML
Our patented ML system runs checkpoint simulations to learn the best way to stop threats.
- Challenge: Building and staffing effective checkpoints – at airports, federal buildings or other secure sites – often means investing limited resources in the best way possible. But how do agencies determine the most effective resource allocations?
- Solution: Noblis researchers designed a ML system to play out the possible outcomes of an attacker trying to smuggle weapons or dangerous materials through a checkpoint to find the most effective ways to deploy resources.

Sparking Simplicity: Quantum Algorithms
Our patented system is making a quantum leap in simplifying safer air traffic.
- Challenge: Air traffic is becoming more complex, both in the total amount of traffic and in the different modalities, including drones and other automated aircraft. Optimizing this traffic for safety and efficiency can reduce delays and holding patterns in high-traffic areas, easing the burden on air traffic personnel and the environment.
- Solution: Noblis developed a patented approach to air traffic that combines quantum and classical computing. Based on the position of an aircraft relative to its destination, the classical and quantum components work together to generate safe and cost-efficient route options that minimize the distance the aircraft travels to the destination and determine safe distances from other aircraft.
Noblis Technology Labs and Research Centers
Our physical labs and virtual spaces align to key areas of research and demonstrate cutting-edge technologies.
Noblis Research is Powered by State-of-the-Art Physical and Virtual Spaces
The Noblis Innovation and Collaboration Center (NICC) located at our Reston, Virginia, headquarters includes laboratory spaces and collaborative work areas – including virtual/extended reality capabilities – where our employees, customers and strategic collaborators can prototype, analyze, model, simulate and showcase results and new ideas.
We offer a suite of services and tools for HPC and advanced data analytics as well as development environments through a secure science and technology cloud. Our physical lab spaces and virtual environments together provide accessible and flexible spaces where we explore complex problems to create practical, forward-thinking, sustainable solutions. These spaces, brought to life by our employees through our many dedicated Research Centers, are home to cutting-edge projects that help our customers advance their critical missions.
