Noblis Experts to Participate in Inaugural Emerging Contaminants (EC) Summit

Noblis Environmental and National Security staff weigh in on the future of the nation’s emerging contaminants during this first-year conference held in Westminster, Colorado

Noblis experts Catherine Vogel, Principal Engineer, Enterprise Engineering and Environmental Solutions, and Andrew Rak, Principal Scientist, National Security and Intelligence, will be participating in the 2016 Emerging Contaminants Summit in Westminster, Colorado.

Held March 1–2, 2016 at The Westin Westminster, the Emerging Contaminants Summit is a first-year event dedicated to the latest developments in the detection, fate and transport, risk assessment, treatment, and regulation of emerging contaminants. The two-day summit comprehensively addresses the mitigation of these contaminants across all environments including surface water, groundwater, drinking water, wastewater, recycled water, soils and sediments. Renowned experts from multiple disciplines will gather to share insights and learn from one another.

Vogel co-chairs the Emerging Contaminant Risks for the Department of Defense (DoD) session alongside Kevin Finneran, Associate Professor of Environmental Engineering & Earth Sciences at Clemson University. The session focuses on the DoD’s EC Program, with presentations on precursors for emerging contaminants in environmental media, ecological risk assessment of aquatic exposures at DoD installations and risk mitigation measures and technologies for emerging contaminants.

Rak presents Risk Mitigation Measures: Replacement of Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) Containing Perfluorooctane Sulfonate (PFOS) within the DoD, focusing on the costs and benefits of continued use of AFFF containing PFOS as compared to an accelerated shift to PFOS-free AFFF, offering potentially less environmental risk while maintaining safety for DoD emergency response teams and firefighters nationwide.

About Noblis
Noblis is a nonprofit science, technology, and strategy organization that brings the best of scientific thought, management, and engineering expertise with a reputation for independence and objectivity. We work with a wide range of government and industry clients in the areas of national security, intelligence, transportation, healthcare, environmental sustainability, and enterprise engineering. Together with our wholly owned subsidiaries, Noblis ESI and Noblis NSP, we solve difficult problems of national significance and support our clients’ most critical missions.

Applying expert knowledge of chemistry and science-based risk assessment, Noblis supports clients, such as the DoD, in assessment of risk from high-priority chemical threats to include chemical warfare agents, toxic industrial chemicals and emerging threats. We have performed modeling and simulation activities for chemical incidents, including those that potentially impact water supplies and distribution systems. Our experts have integrated forensic chemistry tools into remedial programs, including stable isotope analysis, biomarker analysis, and molecular biological tools to determine the causes of contaminated groundwater.
