Dr. Jeffrey Marqusee, Chief Scientist for Enterprise Engineering and Environment, Noblis Inc., provided the opening keynote address at the biannual Advanced Surface Engineering Technologies for a Sustainable Defense (ASETSDefense) workshop on November 18, 2014.
This workshop, which runs November 18 to20, is attended by members of all the military services and representatives from major aerospace and defense contractors. Dr. Marqusee laid out the opportunities and challenges for this community, highlighted the progress made over the last decade, and noted where the Department of Defense (DoD) needs to go in order to achieve its goal of creating a sustainable manufacturing and maintenance industry in support of the defense community.
“Creating a sustainable manufacturing and maintenance industry for this community is not an easy goal to achieve, but it can be done through partnerships and advances in science and technology,” said Dr. Marqusee.
Dr. Marqusee is a nationally known expert in environmental science and technology. He has over 20 years of government leadership experience in research, technology development, and policy aimed at making the DoD a more sustainable, effective organization. His expertise spans areas such as environmental management issues, climate adaptation, sustainable buildings, and energy-related issues for built infrastructure with a focus on innovations to improve DoD’s environmental performance, reduce costs, and enhance mission capabilities.
ASETSDefense is a Department of Defense (DoD) initiative which facilitates the implementation of new, environmentally friendly technologies for surface engineering (coatings and surface treatments). It is sponsored by the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) and the Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP).
